The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Petoskey Affiliation Page
On Sunday September 18th we voted for affiliation. We have requested letters of support from the individuals who are required to provide them and they have all promised to send those to us by Thanksgiving. We are now engaged with filling out the paper work and amassing the various items needed for the application. Our plan is to submit that material prior to the December 15th deadline date.
The following information gives some background to the question and the process which has been followed.
The board of directors is bringing the issue of affiliating with the Unitarian Universalist Association to the congregation. We began that process by focusing the August 7th service around the concepts of what is a UU and specifically how can it assist our congregation to move toward a covenantal relationship with other UU congregations through UUA membership. This page is designed to share information about this process and to answer any questions which are forthcoming, to the best of our ability. The board began our efforts in this regard by calling our District Executive and discussing the steps which are needed in order to achieve affiliation. She was very helpful, as you can see from the notes of that call which are available at the links below. There are notes from the call which outline the specific steps and implications of affiliation. The next link is a list of the materials which we must provide in order to complete an application. Finally, the last link is to excerpts of a sermon by Rev Ken Pfifer at the UU congregation in Ann Arbor, in which he highlights some of the strengths of being a UU. These ideas were part of the service on August 7. Finally there is a statement from yours truly which I shared during the service.UUCOPAffiliationBallot

Since then, we have held a special meeting to vote for changes in the bylaws on September 4th. Votes were successful to change the by-laws to allow for absentee ballots, and to assign assets to the UUA when the organization decides to no longer exist. These votes now open the door to the balloting for affiliation which will be tabulated at the special meeting on September 18th. Please do vote!
